A driveway gate answers vehicles. People still walk: guests, packages, landscapers, kids coming home from the bus. If the only opening in the line is the vehicle leaf, every walk-up either waits on the operator or steps through a driveway that was built for cars.

This is not a recap of swing versus sliding, and it is not a catalog of latch hardware. For those, use Sliding Gate vs Swing Gate and How to Choose the Right Gate for Your Property. This article is the opening those posts do not cover: when the walk-up needs its own gate, next to the driveway, on the same fence line.

Two Openings, Two Jobs

The driveway gate is the vehicle opening — swing, slide, cantilever, or another type that fits the site. Pick that type on the dirt, not from a photo; start with the Gate Style Guide and the product pages for swing, sliding, and automatic gates.

The pedestrian gate is a person-sized leaf in the fence, next to the driveway opening when the site has room for it. Our manual gates page lists pedestrian or driveway configurations as the two jobs a non-automated gate is built for. Same shop, same opening-specific fabrication — different width, different daily use.

Why the Vehicle Gate Is the Wrong Door for People

When someone walks up and the only opening is the driveway, they either wait for the automatic gate or they walk through the vehicle opening while it is open. Neither is what that leaf was built to do.

An automatic driveway gate is a vehicle system: operator, safety devices, and access on the drive. How those pieces fit together is already covered in Understanding How Automatic Gate Systems Work. The walk-through is a different opening that keeps foot traffic out of the vehicle gate's path.

Match the Walk Gate to the Fence, Not a Leftover Panel

The walk gate should read as part of the same line as the driveway gate and the fence — not as a stock panel from a different job. We already publish that we fabricate matching swing, sliding, and pedestrian gates for ornamental fencing, The Georgian, The Athens, flat top steel, and the other fence lines on this site.

If you want to see how that walk gate is drawn before anyone cuts steel, the CAD Drawings library includes pedestrian gate options next to the driveway work. Style between Georgian and Athens is a house-and-masonry question; that comparison already lives in Choosing Fence Material for a Georgia Property.

Hardware on the Walk Gate Is Not the Driveway Operator

The latch, closer, and who can open the walk gate are their own spec. Latch types for pedestrian gates are listed in How to Choose the Right Gate for Your Property — this post will not repeat that list.

Access Control is the page for walk-through credentials: locks, readers, or keypads on a side entry that can match the main gate system. That is how a pedestrian gate stays on the same property rules as the driveway without borrowing the vehicle operator.

If the walk-through is part of a pool enclosure, stop treating it as a driveway convenience gate. Pool gates are specified as self-closing and self-latching on the Pool Gates page; height for the enclosure is in What’s the Best Pool Fence Height?

Keep the Walk Gate Out of the Vehicle Path

The pedestrian leaf still has to swing or latch without putting a person in the driveway travel path. Measure the landing on the walk side the same way you would measure any other opening — then keep that swing out of the vehicle leaf’s job.

Driveway depth, arc, and slide run are already in Design Considerations. Do not lock a pedestrian location until those driveway numbers are real. Swing direction next to a sidewalk can be a local rule, so confirm it before final design.

Manual Now Is Still a Custom Gate

A pedestrian gate does not have to be motorized on day one. Manual gates are built in-house for the opening, latch side, and fence line they belong to, without operators. Can a manual gate be automated later? Often yes, if the gate is designed with future automation in mind.

Final Thoughts

Spec the driveway gate for vehicles. Spec a pedestrian gate for people. Same fence line, two openings, two jobs — which is how the entrance stays closed when someone walks up and the cars still have a gate sized for cars.
