What a gate actually costs.
A gate is closer to its own mini-project than a line item on a fence quote — hardware, hinges or track, and often an operator.
Example pricing for planning. Pricing the fence line too? See the Fence Budget Guide.
Installed price, unautomated
Base gate and hardware, standard access, before an operator.
| Gate type | Installed, unautomated |
|---|---|
| Manual Gate | $600 – $1,200 |
| Pool Gate | $700 – $1,500 |
| Swing Gate | $1,800 – $4,500 |
| Sliding Gate | $2,800 – $6,000 |
| Barrier Gate | $3,500 – $7,000 |
| Cantilever Gate | $4,500 – $9,000 |
| Vertical Pivot Gate | $8,000 – $16,000 |
A basic automated residential swing typically lands around $4,000–$9,000 once the operator, sensors, and access hardware are added — roughly double the same gate left manual.
Why two “Swing Gate” quotes can land far apart
A 12-foot single drive and a 24-foot estate opening are different scales of steel and hardware, even in the same style.
A manual gate is hinges and a latch. A vertical pivot is a lift mechanism engineered for thousands of cycles — which is why it sits at the top of the table.
Sliding needs a track or a reinforced cantilever foundation. A swing on solid, level ground needs comparatively little site work.
Heavier commercial gates need heavier-duty operators. A lighter residential swing doesn’t carry that cost.
Adding automation
Operator, sensors, and access hardware
The operator is only part of it. Automating a gate also means UL325 safety devices like photo-eyes and edge sensors, plus keypad, card, or telephone entry. An underground operator costs more than a standard linear arm.
